Do men want to date smart women? This was the question behind a study published by the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. Reading this, one is reminded of a controversial interview in which Baptist leader John Piper suggested that it was okay for a man to read a commentary by a woman or obey laws and structures created by women, but it was not okay for him to learn from her in person. Learning at a distance, he says, does not involve gender because a man can ignore the fact that the writer is female , but he cannot ignore her gender in person.
I would suggest that what we are seeing is evidence of patriarchy in American culture—Christian and secular. For centuries, Christians have taught that men are superior to women, and these teachings have contributed to the cultural values that shape American society. Much has changed, but many of the ideas that uphold supposed male superiority persist. For instance, popular wisdom holds that men make better, more rational decisions.
Evidence shows otherwise. Patriarchy is intertwined with masculine identity, too. Boys are told that women are equal but shown that manhood requires them to be better than women at things like reason, intelligence, athleticism, leadership, income, and physical and emotional strength. This is the reality revealed by the dating study. Sadly, this is the kind of masculinity promoted by many Christians.
In one study, more than 90 per cent of US college professors famously claimed to be better than average at teaching, for instance — which would be highly unlikely. Our egos blind us to our own flaws. But do we have an even more inflated view of our nearest and dearest? For the new study, the researchers recruited heterosexual couples, who had been together for an average of six years, and around a quarter were married.
The researchers then converted those estimates to IQ points according to the known statistical distribution of intelligence — the famous bell curve.

A new study from the University of Western Australia suggests that while in theory we want a partner who is smart, people who are too clever may actually be a turn-off. So much for calling ourselves sapiosexual. The brainy bunch, probably secretly looking into their own dating viability and desireability, surveyed young adults and asked them to rate what they found attractive in a partner: intelligence, easy-goingness, kindness, and physical attractiveness.
The participants were asked how attracted they would be to a potential partner who was more intelligent than 1 percent, 10 percent, 25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent, 90 percent, and then 99 percent of the population. They were then asked the same question for each of the other three personality traits. However, the study suggests that it may be possible to be too intelligent or too easygoing, with the researchers finding that there was a statistically significant reduction in how attractive intelligence and easygoingness were rated at the 99th percentile, compared to the 90th percentile.
When looking at differences between genders, the findings implied that females value kindness and intelligence in a potential partner more than males. However, overall the differences were small, with the study finding that men and women are essentially similar with respect to how desirable they rate intelligence, physical attraction, easygoingness, and kindness.
How attractive each of the four characteristics was rated to be was also similar whether participants were rating the trait as a sexually attractive characteristic or for a long-term relationship. Humanities News.

A University of Buffalo study recently found that men prefer dating women who are smarter than they are, but only if it is a long distance relationship. The same study shows that when dating face to face, men prefer women who are not as smart. Coming from a guy, I have to point to the second part of that finding as intimidation. I honestly think a lot of men are intimidated by a partner who is smarter.
That’s just my thought though, back to the study. Researchers say the reason is men like the idea of a smarter partner, but they are intimidated by intelligence BOOM! I was right!!

August 22, pm Updated August 22, pm. Published in the British Journal of Psychology , the paper states that women want men to be smart, but not too smart. Data shows that a man who is more intelligent than 90 percent of the population is most desirable — more so than one who is cleverer than 99 percent. Scientists asked people to rate the desirability of potential partners based on different levels of intelligence, looks, how easygoing they were and kindness. Those who are in the top percentile of intelligent people also tend to suffer from conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder.
The study went on to say that if very high IQ levels are associated with negative biological or social characteristics, then perhaps highly intelligent men are getting a raw deal. Read Next.
